To your "butter" assessment... I think Hasbro might be trying to butter us up for a series of Spider-Man figures in various stages of the symbiote transformation via the Secret Wars angle and I think they may be testing the waters for possible other transformation figures down the road. You would have to think that a Hulk transformation series would be better but I think Spidey is a lot easier. I'm looking forward to see if my thought plays out...

Honestly, having this in hand now...<div><br></div><div>...my feelings haven't changed a bit. This is, by far, the most superfluous Spidey variant they've ever made. It's butter scrapped over too much bread. It's completely needless. It's not that it's bad; none of the figures in this wave are BAD, it's just that this oozes "We're running out of ideas for classic Spider-Man variants." And it's kind of a shame because I'd rather see, say, Cosmic Spidey or Spider-Hulk, even Spider-Carnage updated. Yeah, this fits the Secret Wars theme better; this is true, but still...it's really not required for, well, pretty much any shelf. </div>

See figure comment I made 3 months ago... self-fulfilling prophecy...

Agreed. He's fun, but I feel like he should've had more symbiote goo and also...I don't know, I wish that we could've gotten Volcana, Wasp, Zsaji, a new Magneto, some Wrecking Crew members, or updated punk Storm instead of a gimmick Spidey and Magik (who, as much as I love the new figure, was a cameo)

I think the worst thing about it is the reference photo they include which shows the symbiote doing exactly that: going over the leg and side as well. I agree if they had done that, it would be a much better figure as I have been seeing a lot of people customize it to look like that. But instead, Hasbro decided to make a not good, half-finished product that once again, DOESN'T HAVE MATCHING HANDS ACCESSORIES!
