I’m seeing that black spider-man with the chain pegwarming in my area. Haven’t seen any cardiacs, not that I don’t believe you.

If you would have told me before its release that Cardiac would be the pegwarmer of the wave, I would have shepherd-hooked you off the stage. Well, that's EXACTLY what I'm seeing at the stores in my recent in-the-wild outings. While it's a little confusing in that I thought Cardiac would be the white elephant of the wave, I actually think the figure's availability is awesome for fellow collectors. Maybe it's a case of scalpers' whiff...

The interesting thing about Cardiac is…he’s perhaps more relevant now than he was when he first debuted. Yet, unfortunately, he’s kind of all but disappeared, to my knowledge, from comics. His MO bears a striking similarity to a certain controversial and recently topical real-world vigilante, one who sought out revenge on a greed-stricken Big Pharma CEO. Truth be told, I’d be on Cardiac’s side. He’s sort of less villain and more antihero when you look into him. Who could ever hate a guy who’s fighting crime for, effectively, free health care? But what’s perhaps all the more interesting about this guy is…apparently he can be made in plastic form. Perhaps it was a myth, one of those old wives’ tales that circulates first through just word of mouth, and yet, somehow, everyone ends up hearing…but if it just so happens that you didn’t, I recall quite a bit of discussion on how this guy couldn’t be made into a figure. Long-time rumors made the rounds on how he was supposedly off-limits. Obviously that either wasn’t true or, in the end, someone cut a deal because, by my recollection, it had something to do with creator rights and not wanting to sign something or other. Who knows? All I know is…whatever it was, or if it was even true to begin with…it’s not now because I'm literally holding him in my hand. And we’re all the better for it. He’s a great figure of a relatively obscure 90s Spidey frienemy. He’s got a great design that really does stand out and a pretty snazzy "zap" effect for the staff. If only he’d come with his bird-like hang glider too, but alas, beggars can’t be choosers. Considering two years ago people were saying he was an impossible figure, it feels like a miracle we got him at all. If there’s a downside, it’s that he’s lacking boot swivels, which Hasbro seems to just divvy out willy-nilly instead of making it the standard. Frustrating! But otherwise, a solid new entry into the ever-growing obscurities of the Spider-Man rogues gallery. Keep it up! ...and they sure are now that Grizzly has been announced. Keep the oddballs that make the normies go "Who?" coming!
